The purpose of this seminar is to formulate provisional answers to three related questions that seem to arise from conceptual impasses or aporia that have emerged within Queer Theory and LGBT Studies in the last few years. Therefore, this course will ask:.

Given the increasingly rapid integration of lgbt individuals into mainstream American society and the emphasis on assimilation to the larger culture within the lgbt community as a whole, why does Queer Theory continue to focus on shame, marginalization, alienation, and failure in characterizing lgbt identity? Several prominent queer theorists, most notably Judith Halberstam and Jose Esteban Munoz, have recently articulated a critique of the field for paying insufficient attention to queers of color precisely at the point where, apparently paradoxically, the investigation of the intersection of sexual orientation and race and the analysis of the global situation of lgbt peoples have become central in the discipline.
